How relevant is Bing in South Africa?

by Wizard on February 22, 2010

Inspired by Mark Littlewood ’s post at The Business Leaders Network on “Bing vs Google” and Alex Kelleher’s post on analysing the “Google alphabet“, here’s what the two search engines have to say about South Africa. In short, we’re looking at the “auto-complete” feature offered by each search engine. It’s a drop-down list of the most searched for terms that appears as you enter each letter of the search phrase.

Bing’s results

We’ll start with Bing’s results:

  • aol, amazon, amazon.com
  • bing, bank of america, best buy
  • craigslist, cnn, comcast.net
  • dictionary, disney channel, dictionary.com
  • ebay, espn, expedia
  • facebook, facebook.com, fox news
  • google, gmail. gmail.com
  • hotmail, hi5, home depot

  • www.google.com, walmart, weather
  • xm radio, xbox, x17
  • yahoo, youtube, yahoo.com
  • zip codes, zillow, zillow.com

True to form, as identified by Mark Littlewood, the results are exactly the same as for any other country… I also found it a little ironic that slapped across Bing’s home page for the South African search was a breathtaking picture of Turquoise Lake, in… Clark National Park, Alaska, USA. There are plenty of spectacular images of South Africa, thank you very much!

Oh, and while Micorosft owns bing.co.za, they don’t use it prefering to redirect users to the .com address.

Google’s Results

  • absa internet banking, absa, autotrader.co.za
  • beeld, bid or buy, british airways
  • computicket, career junction, currency converter
  • discovery health, dstv, discovery
  • edgars, exclusive books, eskom
  • facebook, facebook login, fnb
  • gmail, gumtree, gumtree cape town

  • xe, xstrata, xbox 360
  • youtube, yahoo mail, yahoo
  • z83 form, zeda car sales, z83

Quite lekker, eh! Draw whatever conclusions you want about the actual content of the local “auto-complete” results from Google for South Africa but one thing’s for sure, I know which search engine I’ll be using next to search for South African content.

Debunking Internet email hoaxes & urban legends

June 29, 2009

Ever received an e-mail message with the subject “Cookie Recipe from Woolies” or what about the email where the last graphic minutes of A330 Air France Flight 447 are recorded on a Casio Z750 and later retrieved from a memory stick? My favourite one is still the “Shark Attacking Helicopter”. It was even [...]

The Festival of St John, 2009

June 26, 2009

Earlier this week we celebrated St. John’s Festival (not rugby) at my son’s school, Michael Mount. Some of my favourite photo’s from the evening are displayed below. This year my dad is visiting on a working holiday from France, so we dragged him along. Naturally, he wanted to know what the festival is [...]

The Matrix movie trilogy, watched all at once

December 20, 2007

December 16 is a public holiday (”Day of Reconciliation“) in South Africa. It has become a tradition in my family to pick a movie series and watch the entire thing on or around this day. This is the fourth year we’ve done this. Previous sagas include the entire extended edition of The [...]

What is the biggest contributor to global warming?

September 28, 2007

Unless you’ve been living in a cave (and inadvertently reducing your environmental footprint) you’ll know that there’s a lot of buzz around global warming. I find it really, though, odd that one of the biggest contributors to global warming is glossed over and often-time not even mentioned.
Can you guess what it is?
In late 2006 the [...]

No one animal’s life is any less sacred than another’s. It’s hypocritical to protect some animals, and yet eat others just because we don’t call them pets.

Quote of the day for 2007-07-06

July 6, 2007

At sixteen I was stupid, confused and indecisive. At twenty-five I was wise, self-confident, prepossessing and assertive. At forty-five I am stupid, confused, insecure and indecisive. Who would have supposed that maturity is only a short break in adolescence?
